TEACHING PRACTICE PHASE I - WEEK 5

 TEACHING PRACTICE PHASE I

WEEK 5

11/08/2025 - 16/08/2025

INTRODUCTION

During the fifth week of my teaching practice (Phase I), I actively engaged in both academic and co-curricular activities. I handled four periods in my subject and took part in the school assembly. The week was marked by the celebration of World Elephant Day and World Organ Donation Day. I also had the opportunity to assist in the Shraddha class, teaching both Malayalam and Hindi. In addition, I participated in the Independence Day celebration, the mid-day meal distribution, and contributed to the smooth conduct of the eye check-up camp organized in the school.

CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

This week, I got the opportunity to handle four periods in both Chemistry and Physics for classes VIII and IX. The lessons were carefully prepared to ensure clarity, interactivity, and alignment with the prescribed curriculum. Each class was handled with suitable examples, student participation, and activities that enabled better understanding of the concepts.

*Monday, 11th August 2025 – 6th Period – Class VIII – Chemistry (Earlier Attempts for Element Classification)

In this session, I introduced students to the early attempts made to classify elements before the modern periodic table. I explained Lavoisier’s classification of metals and non-metals, Dobereiner’s Triads, and Newlands’ Law of Octaves. Students were able to compare the limitations of each system and understand the need for a more scientific arrangement of elements.

*Tuesday, 12th August 2025 – 3rd Period – Class VIII – Chemistry (Mendeleev’s Periodic Law)

The focus of this class was Mendeleev’s Periodic Law and its application in creating the Periodic Table of Elements. I discussed the characteristics of Mendeleev’s classification, highlighting how elements were arranged in groups and periods based on atomic mass. Students were encouraged to observe patterns and actively participated in identifying elements placed in the same groups.

*Wednesday, 13th August 2025 – 6th Period – Class VIII – Physics (Calculation of Speed, Distance, and Time)

This session introduced students to the basic formulas for speed, distance, and time. I explained the relationships between them using the equation Speed = Distance / Time. Several practical examples from daily life (such as travel, cycling, and running) were discussed, and students solved simple numerical problems to strengthen their understanding.

*Thursday, 14th August 2025
No classes were conducted due to the School Parliament Election.

*Friday, 15th August 2025
The school remained closed on account of the Independence Day celebrations.

*Saturday, 16th August 2025 – 1st Period – Class IX – Chemistry (Lanthanides and Actinides)

In this class, I introduced students to the f-block elements of the periodic table – the Lanthanides and Actinides. Their general properties, position in the periodic table, and importance in modern applications (such as nuclear energy, alloys, and magnets) were discussed. Students showed great interest in learning about the practical uses of these rare earth elements.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Along with handling regular classes, I actively took part in a variety of co-curricular activities that enriched my teaching practice experience and helped me interact with students beyond the classroom.

Tuesday, 12th August 2025 – Assembly & World Elephant Day Celebration

On Tuesday, I participated in the morning assembly, which included prayer, thought for the day, news reading, and pledge. As part of the school parliament election, a “Meet the Candidate” program was conducted during the assembly, where students introduced their candidates along with their symbols. The school also organized the School Parliament Election in connection with 100 years of Quantum Mechanics.

The assembly also highlighted the importance of World Elephant Day, observed to raise awareness about the conservation of elephants. Students presented short talks, skits, and posters emphasizing the significance of protecting elephants as a part of our biodiversity.I delivered a brief talk on the occasion of World Elephant Day.

Wednesday, 13th August 2025 – Shraddha Class (Hindi)

On Wednesday, I assisted in the Shraddha class, where I took sessions in Hindi for students. I focused on simple vocabulary, pronunciation, and interactive learning methods. It was a valuable experience that helped me understand the importance of patience, compassion, and adopting diverse teaching strategies.

Thursday, 14th August 2025 – School Parliament Election, Shraddha Class (Malayalam) & World Organ Donation Day Celebration

On Thursday, the school conducted the School Parliament Election, which was a significant event of the week. This year, the election was organized with the unique theme “100 Years of Quantum Mechanics.” The theme made the process both educational and engaging, as it connected scientific concepts with democratic practices.

Students contested for various positions in the parliament, and instead of traditional symbols, they were assigned innovative election symbols inspired by quantum mechanics. Some of the creative symbols included:

Superposition Cat (referring to Schrödinger’s famous thought experiment)
Quantum Wave (representing the wave nature of particles)
Qubit Cube (symbolizing the basic unit of quantum information)
Quantum Leap Frog (indicating sudden transitions or leaps)

The election process was carried out systematically, giving pupils a practical experience of democracy in action. Campaigning, voting, and the announcement of results were done in a lively and disciplined manner. The scientific theme not only sparked curiosity about quantum mechanics but also instilled in students the values of leadership, responsibility, and teamwork.

On Thursday, I participated in the Shraddha class for Malayalam. I engaged students with basic reading and writing activities and ensured that learning was stress-free and enjoyable.

In addition, the school observed World Organ Donation Day with a special program. Teachers and students highlighted the importance of organ donation through speeches and presentations, spreading awareness about how one decision can save multiple lives.

Friday, 15th August 2025 – Independence Day Quiz

As part of the Independence Day celebrations, I helped conduct a quiz competition based on India’s freedom struggle, national leaders, and patriotic themes. The quiz encouraged healthy competition among students and reinforced their knowledge about India’s history and values of independence.

EXTRA - CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Monday, 11th August 2025 – Mid-Day Meal Distribution

On Monday, I assisted in the mid-day meal distribution program. This experience gave me a chance to interact with students during their lunch break and understand the importance of such initiatives in ensuring proper nutrition and energy for effective learning. It also helped me realize the role of teachers in maintaining discipline, orderliness, and care during such programs.

Tuesday, 12th August 2025 – Eye Check-Up Camp

On Tuesday, I participated in the Eye Check-Up Camp organized at the school by Alhiba Hospital, Nedumangad. The camp provided free eye testing for students and staff, aiming at early detection of vision problems. I helped in coordinating students, maintaining discipline, and ensuring that the camp ran smoothly. The program was highly beneficial as it promoted awareness about eye health and encouraged students to take better care of their vision.

CONCLUSION

The fifth week of my teaching practice was a truly enriching experience as it combined academic, co-curricular, and extra-curricular engagements. Through classroom teaching, I was able to handle important topics in Chemistry and Physics, ensuring that students not only grasped the concepts but also related them to real-life applications. The celebrations of World Elephant Day, World Organ Donation Day, and Independence Day added vibrancy to the week and gave students valuable moral and social lessons. Participation in the Shraddha classes helped me nurture patience, empathy, and adaptability in my teaching approach. The School Parliament Election with its unique theme of “100 Years of Quantum Mechanics” was an innovative learning experience that merged science with democratic values. Moreover, my involvement in the mid-day meal distribution and the eye check-up camp allowed me to contribute to the welfare of students beyond academics. Overall, Week 5 helped me evolve as a more responsible, empathetic, and resourceful teacher trainee.
